RI Witness history
It was in 1995, following the use of the wrong embryos in a couple undergoing fertility treatment in the United Kingdom, that awareness was raised of the need for a traceability system to ensure the correct allocation of gametes and embryos in assisted reproduction treatments.
Today RI Witness is the most reliable and established electronic witnessing system in the industry, helping our embryologists in the laboratory to eliminate any possibility of error in gamete and embryo manipulation.
What is RI Witness?
Cooper Surgical‘s RI Witness is a gamete and embryo tracking and traceability system used in all of our laboratories to ensure that gamete and embryo samples are correctly assigned to couples receiving treatment.
The system is based on the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology that monitors the activity in the IVF laboratory at all times. This reduces the risk of human error during sample handling.
Our objective is to guarantee the safety and traceability of our patients’ gamete and embryo samples.
Assignment of identification cards
At the beginning of the cycle, each couple is assigned an identification card, containing a unique personal code, which they present at egg retrieval or sperm donation.
Labeling of samples
Each sample is labeled with a chip that corresponds to the code of the assigned cards.
This will help to have the samples identified throughout the treatment process in the laboratory.
Identification of samples
Each time a sample is moved from one location to another in the laboratory, it is scanned, so the system automatically records the location and time of each sample movement.
Sample handling
The RI Witness identification system confirms the identity of the samples and allows embryologists to proceed with the handling of the samples.
Elimination of errors
If an incompatible sample appears in the working area, an alarm will sound immediately, so that the system warns the embryologist to avoid possible errors.
